Communication skills

Communication skills are abilities you use when giving and receiving different kinds of information. These include communicating ideas, feelings or what’s happening around you. Communication skills involve listening, speaking, observing and empathizing

What are the 3 types of communication skills

Verbal communication

I don’t think there is much explanation needed on verbal communication. Verbal communication is the way we speak when interacting with other people. We do it on a regular basis with our family, friends, colleagues, etc. Verbal communication is sharing of information using speech as the medium. It is thought of by most people as the most expressive way of communication, although the non-verbal parts actually rule on that front!

Non-verbal communication

Interpersonal communication is a lot more than a mere exchange of words. For conveying the message to the other person, apart from the information, it is also important to see how the message is passed on.

There are many non-verbal cues and behaviours skills during an interaction that say a lot; like facial expressions, gestures, tone of voice, body language, etc.

In fact, your non-verbal communication talks more than your words do. A lot of times, people miss out on this more important aspect of communication. Which is why Communication skills training make it a point to emphasize on the same.

Written Communication

Written communication can be the most difficult and trickiest form of communication. And that’s why it takes up a fair amount of time in a communication skills training.

Because expressing something in person while verbally talking to the person gives you chance to figure out if there is any misunderstanding. In written communication, emotions often get missed out.

In a written communication, every person has a different way of interpreting the same data. And if not written unambiguously, can create misunderstanding. That’s why it’s extremely important to proof read your documents before sending them out.

Written communication is mostly used in formal situations in the forms of Emails, reports, letters, etc. These are very sensitive forms of communication skills in a business environment, and therefore it’s important to follow rules to use these forms effectively. And these can be very easily learned by attending communication skills training, and then practice, of course.

Communication skills training will help you enhance all these three types of communication skills. it is very important that you master all the three for being an exceptional communicator. And being an exceptional communicator is not restricted to a specific role, every person should be one.
